A year I didn’t expect
I’m part of the Para Equestrian Ireland team and I was practising my show jumping with my horse Monty when we went into a double jump and fell. I couldn’t move.
I’d already lost the use of my right leg below the knee due to an injury ten years ago, but this time was different.
The doctor told me I was paralysed from the neck down and they discovered I had Central Cord Syndrome where my cervical vertebrae right down to my coccyx were bruised, inflamed and damaged.
It was really hard in the hospital as there was nowhere for me and my family to be together.
Once I was transferred to Musgrave Park Hospital, the biggest difference was finding Horatio’s Garden.
It was amazing to lie there in the sunshine, read a book, listen to music, or a podcast. We spent loads of time there as a family too, having cakes and coffee. I really appreciated the sense of independence I got back.
All the activities, whether it’s pizza making or ceramics, are tailored to help with our rehab, progress and confidence.
The garden is always there for you in tough moments. It gives you that freedom to go outside, have a few minutes and reflect on everything.
Gradually, I’ve got back movement on my left side, but my right side hasn’t returned in the same way. I don’t know what my recovery time would have been like if the garden hadn’t been there.
It’s been a saving grace for me and my family.
