On Monday 8 July, floral designer Hazel Gardiner visited Horatio’s Garden London & South East to run a fascinating flower-arranging workshop.
Arriving in the garden with British-grown flowers bought from the morning market, Hazel quickly settled into the garden, making an effort to meet all the patients, volunteers and visitors present. She then enjoyed a tour from Head Gardener Ashley, gathering foliage along the way to complement the flowers and to ensure that the garden formed a part of the day’s designs.
Once everything was gathered, the volunteers helped Hazel to lay out the blooms she’d brought and to prepare for the afternoon’s workshops. Hazel then gave the volunteers a quick demonstration, teaching them a new skill and enabling them to support the patient attending the workshop later in the afternoon. Everyone there listened intently, learning a huge amount from from the step-by-step discussion and Hazel’s thoughtful responses to any and all questions.
Following the demonstration, Hazel led a workshop for a group of people currently spending time in the spinal centre. There was a great turnout, and everyone really enjoyed hearing more about her mindful approach to floral design. By using her top tips, everyone present was able to create their own unique, beautiful designs. Lots of those attending said they had never done anything like it before and would love to do it again!
Reflecting on the day, Hazel said: “It was such a special day for me and an honour to meet everyone in the garden. I do what I do to bring joy through flowers and transport minds with craft, so it is incredibly heartwarming to receive such wonderful feedback. I thank you all deeply for welcoming me and giving me this opportunity.”
We are so grateful to Hazel for lending us her time, and creating such a mindful and memorable day for all involved.
