Biking for Barry

On 15 September 2024, Nick and Sheren took part in the London to Brighton Cycle, raising money for Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville as a tribute to their friend Barry. Nick also took part in the South Coast Ultra Challenge on 7 September, walking 57km between Eastbourne and Hove to raise money for Barry.

Barry experienced a life-changing bike accident in October 2023, resulting in a permanent spinal injury. He spent time in the Addenbrookes Hospital and Ipswich Hospital, before coming to the National Spinal Injuries Centre. It was here that he first encountered Horatio’s Garden, and both Nick and Sheren saw the impact that it had.

Discussing her first experience of the garden, Sheren said: “Barry took me through to a beautiful haven right in the centre of the hospital, called Horatio’s Garden. It’s a totally accessible self-service (and free) cafe, garden, activity centre and mental escape from the sterile hospital environment. Horatio’s Garden is a lifeline to patients and their families, where they can spend time together and also feel a bit of independence.”

Nick said: “Horatio’s Garden provides a safe haven where families can relax in an area that isn’t like the hospital but is a place where people can make tea, coffee and have cake of all kinds, made by volunteers on a daily basis. There are also events like visiting musicians, arts and crafts and even gardening skills. This is a place where a sense of peace and normality is present, that allows for people to share their experiences and find solace and camaraderie during the difficult times when first entering the clinic.”

The London to Brighton cycle route is 55 miles long, making it a real test of endurance! Sheren, who is more used to power-lifting than cardio challenges, said: “Finishing was the only option. If Barry can battle through rehab with such grit and determination, then I had zero excuse not to manage a simple bike ride!”

Both Sheren and Nick successfully completed the bike ride and raised a combined total of over £2,000! We are so grateful to them both for spreading the word about Horatio’s Garden, and for raising such an incredible amount to support our Stoke Mandeville garden. Barry clearly has some excellent friends!
