Visit Thorp Perrow, home to one of the UK’s finest collections of trees, shrubs, and wildlife, for a special fungi and arboretum guided walk in support of Horatio’s Garden North.
The beautiful arboretum comes to life during October with stunning displays of autumn colour and golden leaves softly falling to the woodland floor and this is the best time of year to learn more about the fantastic array of fungi growing.
Start your morning in the beautiful summerhouse, enjoying views over the lake and arboretum, whilst sipping on a relaxing cup of herbal tea. You’ll then head out on a dedicated fungus foray led by Dr Keith Thomas, a doctor in microbiology and a fountain of fungi knowledge. You’ll learn hands on foraging techniques and be able to develop your skills in this interesting field.
This event also includes a guided tour with Thorp Perrow curator, Faith Douglas, where she will walk you through the arboretum, highlighting the areas of autumn colour and any other seasonal highlights.
At the end of both guided walks, finish your visit with a light lunch in the summerhouse, where you will also have the opportunity to hear about Horatio’s Garden and pledge a plant towards our new garden at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.
This is a primarily outdoor event, so raincoats and sensible footwear are advisable!
This event is in aid of Horatio’s Garden North at The James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. Once open early next year, the beautifully designed, expertly staffed garden will improve the mental health of people with life-changing spinal injuries spending many months in rehabilitation, often far from home, from across North Yorkshire, Tees Valley, Cumbria and Northumberland.
