Visit Thorp Perrow, home to one of the UK’s finest collections of trees, shrubs, and wildlife, for a special fungi and arboretum guided walk in support of Horatio’s Garden North.
The beautiful arboretum comes to life during October with stunning displays of autumn colour and golden leaves softly falling to the woodland floor. This is the best time of year to learn more about the fantastic array of fungi growing throughout the arboretum.
Start your morning in the beautiful summerhouse, enjoying views over the lake and arboretum whilst sipping on a relaxing cup of herbal tea. You’ll then head out on a dedicated fungus foray led by Dr Keith Thomas, a doctor in microbiology and a fountain of fungi knowledge. You’ll learn hands-on foraging techniques and have the opportunity to develop your skills in this fascinating field.
The event also includes a guided tour with the curator of Thorp Perrow who will walk you through the arboretum, highlighting the trees in our collection, autumnal colour and any other seasonal highlights.
At the end of both guided walks, finish your visit in the summerhouse with an exclusive lunch from the Side Hustle food truck, run by local Michelin Guide restaurant Hansom. Enjoy a selection of small plates and pudding inspired by the foraging theme and celebrating the best of seasonal ingredients.
You’ll also have the opportunity to hear about Horatio’s Garden and pledge a plant towards our new garden at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
There will also be a silent auction, with all proceeds going to Horatio’s Garden in Middlesbrough. A fantastic selection of prizes and experiences will be generously provided by local businesses, giving you the chance to support this wonderful cause while taking home something special.
This is a primarily outdoor event, so raincoats and sensible footwear are advisable!
This special event is in support of the new Horatio’s Garden at James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough – a wonderful charity improving the lives of people after life-changing spinal injury through beautiful, expertly staffed gardens.
