A special afternoon at the stunning Dorset Walled Garden with rosarian Michael Marriott, known for his work with David Austin Roses and a world-leading expert in English roses. Michael will be giving a tour and talking about the many different varieties of roses in this beautiful private garden which is rarely open to the public.
Generously being opened for Horatio’s Garden by Susanne Cooper, Dorset Walled Garden is nestled in deep rural Dorset in a large chalk downland valley within an area of outstanding natural beauty.
The garden was romanticised and softened by British garden designers Isabel and Julian Bannerman in 2011 who imbued their romantic, blousy, characteristic style of planting, with a focus on scent, whilst taking on the large open landscape surrounding the house and garden. They created the rose and the rill gardens, incorporating soft oak balustrading and raised oak beds, with beehive yew topiaries standing tall throughout.
The collection of roses has evolved over time with over 100 different varieties of both once-flowering and repeat-flowering roses, a mixture of Old English and French shrubs, climbers and an abundance of ramblers, along with some newer varieties.
