We were delighted to discover that Horatio’s Garden Midlands and former patient, Pip, have featured in the New Year issue of SHIRE magazine.

The team decided to get in touch following the broadcast of our BBC Lifeline Appeal last September, which featured three powerful stories, including Pip’s. Having been enraptured and moved by her tale, they felt compelled to share it with their readers too.

Pip became tetraplegic following a horse riding accident. She spent many months in Horatio’s Garden Midlands following her injury, which was how we came to meet her. A constant source of inspiration, Pip spent much of her time thinking of others, remaining a warm and welcoming spirit throughout her stay in hospital.

She could often be found appreciating all that the garden had to offer every day and as the article mentions, Pip’s love of gardening deepened throughout her time in the haven. However, it was only in hindsight that she realised just how beneficial all her horticultural therapy sessions had been to both her physical and mental rehabilitation, not to mention the creative activities she savoured throughout her time in hospital.

Whilst Pip’s story is undoubtedly the focus of the feature, the piece also generously shares more about our work as a national entity and the involvement of Horatio’s Garden Ambassador, Alan Titchmarsh MBE.
