On Thursday 8 January, Horatio’s Garden Wales was thrilled to welcome Rhys James, High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, who presented the garden with a cheque for over £9000.
The money was raised at the High Sheriff’s Carol Service last year, which took place on Tuesday 5 December in Llandaff Cathedral.
The service was raising money for two local charities: Horatio’s Garden Wales and the South Wales Police Youth Trust. The South Wales Police Youth Trust was set up as a registered charity in 2009, offering grants to organisations and projects aiming to prevent young people being drawn into crime, antisocial behaviour and substance misuse.
The event was a great success, featuring performances from talented musicians like the choir of Howell’s School Llandaff, soprano soloist Ellen Williams, and tenor soloist Wynne Evans.
In January, Rhys James came to Horatio’s Garden Wales to present the charity with the £9,122 raised at the carol service. Rhys spoke to Head Gardener Owen Griffiths and Horatio’s Garden Director of Communications and Events Zoë Franklin, also meeting patients and volunteers present in the garden. Those he met shared their stories from the garden, giving Rhys an unparalleled insight into the positive difference the money raised will make to many people’s lives. They told him more about the activities they’d enjoyed as part of the Arts Programme and their horticultural therapy sessions with Head Gardener Owen, as well as sharing more about how the garden has helped them and their loved ones to navigate life following a spinal injury.
We are so grateful to Rhys for choosing to make Horatio’s Garden Wales one of the beneficiaries of the High Sheriff’s Carol Service. To find out how you too can donate to the garden, click here.
