Penny was injured by a horse in 2014, causing her to suffer a C6/7 spinal fracture which left her paralysed from the chest down. She was treated in the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre in Salisbury for over six months and it was here that the family first discovered Horatio’s Garden.
Penny loved nothing more than being outside, so having a garden she could visit during this difficult time was invaluable. The whole family spent many happy hours together in the sanctuary whenever Richard and Charlotte came to visit and could feel the garden gently helping them all to adjust to living with such life-changing injuries.
Sharing their story, Richard and Charlotte both say that “The time Penny spent in hospital was extremely challenging for us all, but it was made bearable by having access to this wonderful garden and the support provided by the charity.”
Penny sadly passed away in July 2017 due to complications from her injury.
Now, Richard and Charlotte have generously decided to cycle 100 miles from their home to Lyme Regis and back as a tribute to Penny, whilst raising money for us in order to ensure Horatio’s Garden will always be there for people facing similarly difficult times in the present and future.
They are hoping to be joined by some friends for all or part of their cycle and between them intend to raise an incredible total of £7,500 for the charity. Richard is also planning to match the donations he receives in order to raise as much as he possibly can.
If you would like to make a donation to either Richard or Charlotte, please visit their JustGiving pages by clicking the links below.
We are so grateful to the Weight family for everything they’ve done and are doing to support Horatio’s Garden.
