The Mayor of Salisbury, Derek Brown, and his wife, Penny, are planning to climb Kilimanjaro this month to raise funds for the Mayor’s three chosen charities – ABF the Soldiers Charity, the Friends of Salisbury Cathedral and Horatio’s Garden. They’re anticipating taking six days to complete the challenge and will have to cope with temperatures ranging of 30 degrees celsius to minus 30 degrees during the climb. Derek said:
“We’ve known for a long time that we were going to do this, so we’ve been training steadily. We’ve done lots of long walks and the rowing machine, things like that, so physically I think we’re feeling pretty good. The only thing we’re not sure of course, is what the altitude will do to us. Of course, that’s not something we can prepare for, we just have to take it very slowly, drink lots of water, eat and do as we’re told and hopefully we’ll get to the top!”

Update: Success! Derek and Penny reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro on the 1st February, taking the Salisbury Mayoral Chain with them. An incredible achievement – well done and thank you from all at Horatio’s Garden!
