About Horatio’s Garden South West

Designed by six-time RHS Chelsea Gold Medal Winner, Cleve West, Horatio’s Garden South West opened in 2012. The garden was the first Horatio’s Garden to be created from donations given in memory of Horatio Chapple, a teenager who volunteered at the centre during his school holidays. Inspired by Horatio’s original idea, the sanctuary was thoughtfully created to support people as they physically and mentally adjust to living with a life-changing spinal cord injury. Everything is of a high quality and the garden is designed to be a home away from home for people facing a long hospital stay far from their loved ones.

The garden is cleverly designed to bring the sights, sounds and scents of nature to the heart of the hospital and is there for patients, their loved ones and NHS staff to enjoy whenever they like. As such, the haven features a contemporary garden room, as well as a stunning glasshouse, both of which enable people to spend time amidst nature all year-round and are a real sight to behold.

Featuring a series of limestone walls, an apple archway, small summerhouse pod and a tranquil rill, a calm atmosphere permeates the sanctuary. Each flowerbed is full of seasonal planting too, with all the plants carefully chosen for their aesthetic, multi-sensory and wildlife luring qualities. Mature beech hedging was donated from Cleve West’s 2012 RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden, which was awarded Best in Show, whilst 23 varieties of trees can also be found in the garden.

The garden is an ever-evolving, thriving project and during the Open Day you will have the opportunity to meet both the Head Gardener, Lucy Thorpe, as well as our dedicated volunteer team who help to nurture the garden and support people using the sanctuary. Head Gardener Lucy will be giving a short talk to visitors at 3pm, whilst everyone will be waiting to warmly welcome you and share more of the Horatio’s Garden South West story throughout the afternoon.
