This year we’re celebrating Trustees’ Week, which runs from Monday 4th to Friday 8th November.

Our trustees are an integral part of Horatio’s Garden, volunteering their time, expertise and advice to ensure that the charity continues to plant hope for everyone affected by spinal injury across the UK.

All our trustees are incredibly dedicated to the charity, but it is particularly close to the heart of Executive Trustee Victoria Holton. When asked why she chose to be involved with Horatio’s Garden and what being a trustee means to her she shared;

“Before my injury in 2002, I’d go out for a run when I needed some thinking time and generally returned home muddy and happy. I adored being out in nature, skydiving and mountain biking too. It was so hard to find myself paralysed and in hospital for 19 months, made even worse because I had very little access to the outside world.

I love being a trustee of Horatio’s Garden because I know how much better this terrible time would have been if I’d been able to get outside. My family and friends would have found it easier too. When I see patients out in the gardens, I feel relieved that these amazing sanctuaries are there for them, to lift the stress and nourish the soul. We all need a bit of this, especially when times are so tough.”

Trustees’ Week is an annual event that recognises the wonderful work of people like Victoria, who are part of a network of over 700,000 volunteer trustees who run charities across England and Wales. This year the National Council for Voluntary Organisations is an organising partner of the week and are delighted to support such a worthy campaign. Not only is the event an opportunity to highlight trustees’ excellent work, it is also a chance to encourage new people from all walks of life to consider making a difference through trusteeship and other volunteering opportunities.
