One year ago today, Horatio’s Garden Chelsea won a gold medal and Best in Show at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2023. The beautiful, immersive, fully accessible garden was thoughtfully designed by the Charlotte Harris and Hugo Bugg of the award-winning Harris Bugg Studio and generously supported by Project Giving Back.
With work beginning last week in Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East, the legacy home of Horatio’s Garden Chelsea, we’re sharing a special new film to celebrate all the incredible things that have happened since this time last year. You can watch the film by clicking here.
Horatio’s Garden Chelsea was the first garden at Chelsea designed with the requirements of people with mobility needs at its heart. A restorative haven, the garden distils the key elements that people value in Horatio’s Garden as they adapt to a new way of living. In Monty Don’s words, “the judges gave this Best in Show because it is flawless.”
Incorporating stories and influences from the Sheffield region, Horatio’s Garden Chelsea connected to its future home as our eighth garden, Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.
A therapeutic place for people facing life-changing injuries, Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East will support an extensive geographical area from the West Midlands to East Anglia, South Yorkshire to Lincolnshire. More than 360 in-patients, their family and friends, thousands of outpatients, as well as over 250 NHS staff looking after them will benefit from the garden every year once it opens in 2025.
Dr Olivia Chapple, Founder and Chair of Trustees of Horatio’s Garden, said: “We know how much of a difference our gardens make to people reflecting and adjusting after a life-changing spinal injury. Horatio’s Garden Sheffield & East will be a special place with a profoundly positive impact for people, their families and NHS staff and we are so thrilled to bring our Best in Show winning garden at Chelsea to the heart of Sheffield to benefit so many people every year.”
